The Shape of Water lidera cómoda la contienda En la ceremonia de anuncio de los nominados para la 90º edición de los Premios de la Academia, en la que Andy Serkis (War for the Planet of the Apes) y Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip) fueron los conductores del evento, que contó con participaciones de Priyanka Chopra, Rosario Dawson, Gal Gadot, Salma Hayek, Michelle Rodriguez, Zoe Saldana, Molly Shannon, Rebel Wilson y Michelle Yeoh a la hora de dar a conocer los candidatos para las categorías técnicas. Quien lidera la contienda es The Shape of Water con un total de 13 nominaciones, que la convierten en una automática favorita como ya se presuponía. La siguen de lejos Dunkirk con ocho y Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri con siete. Esta última quedó fuera de la categoría al Mejor Director, que también excluyó a Steven Spielberg por The Post -si bien tuvo reconocimiento a Mejor Película y, por supuesto, a Actriz por Meryl Streep quedó bastante fuera de la carrera-. De todas formas es una lista bien diversa que dejará conforme a la mayoría, dada la inclusión de Christopher Nolan, Guillermo Del Toro, Jordan Peele y Greta Gerwig. La que en cierto sentido sorprendió fue Phantom Thread de Paul Thomas Anderson, cuyas posibilidades se suponían disminuidas y sin embargo consiguió cinco menciones, entre las que se cuentan Mejor Película, Director y Actriz de Reparto. Quien se perdió la oportunidad de figurar fue Armie Hammer, a quien se tenía como firme contendiente por el premio al Mejor Actor Secundario desde hace meses, sin embargo la Academia decidió incluir a Woody Harrelson y Sam Rockwell juntos por la misma producción. No se puede decir del todo que sea una sorpresa, pero sí el reconocimiento a Denzel Washington por Roman J. Israel, Esq es llamativo, al ocupar una vacante que bien pudieron llenar Tom Hanks o James Franco -el dejar afuera a Jake Gyllenhaal ya se ha hecho costumbre-. Jimmy Kimmel conducirá por segundo año consecutivo la ceremonia de entrega de las estatuillas, que tendrá lugar el domingo 4 de marzo en el Teatro Dolby en Hollywood.
